Foreign Minister attends Global media forum

Minister of Foreign Affairs L.Purevsuren participated in the “Media and Foreign Policy in the Digital Age” international conference held in Bonn, Germany on 22-24 June 2015.

The forum was organised by the German international broadcaster, Deutsche Welle, having panel discussions on “Foreign policy and international crisis reporting” “How technology is redefining diplomacy” and “Resource wars - Implications for foreign and security policy”.

Foreign Minister L.Purevsuren was one of the speakers at the session on “Resource wars - Implications for foreign and security policy”. The session touched upon threats to national security of Central Asian, African and Latin American states arising from conflicts and competition due to increasing scarcity and growing demand for oil, natural gas, rare minerals and other natural resources.

The Foreign Minister underlined the importance of establishing good governance, creating sound legal environment for mining sector, identifying foreign investors as well as local citizen’s interests and demands, concluding agreements on sustainable cooperation and wise utilization of incomes from exploitation of natural resources in resource rich countries. He has also emphasized the need of investing in education and training of professionals. The Minister further noted Mongolia’s willingness to share with other developing countries its experiences gained through 25 years of democratic reforms and mentioned that Mongolia has already commenced training of civil servants and journalists from several foreign countries.

Government officials, representatives of non-governmental organisations and research institutions attended the forum and highlighted negative effects of resource related conflicts on living conditions of local residents leading to starvation and poverty. The participants expressed their opinions and exchanged views on resolving these issues.
